The escalating problem of plastic waste is a significant contributor to the degradation of the global environment. While efforts to reduce plastic waste persist, there is a growing emphasis on recycling discarded plastic. Gasification, a process that involves incinerating plastic waste and utilizing the resulting gases, is one such method. For example, the carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced from burning plastic can be captured and repurposed. Carbon dioxide is used in carbonated beverages and dry ice, while hydrogen serves as a raw material for ammonia synthesis.

Additionally, there is a method called depolymerization where plastic waste is broken down into its original raw materials or monomers through chemical reactions. These monomers can then be repolymerized to create new plastic products.
For example, used PET bottles can be chemically depolymerized into monomers and then reformed into new PET bottles. While it was previously considered difficult to recycle used PET bottles into new ones, advancements in depolymerization technology have now made it possible to produce PET bottles of equivalent quality to those made from crude oil.
