Selective adsorption and removal of noble metals using Activated Carbon as efficient adsorbents
Osaka Gas Chemical has long manufactured and sold various activated carbons for the purpose of decoloring and removing impurities in the refining process of synthetic materials in the fields of pharmaceutical materials, chemical intermediates, and electronic materials.
Activated carbon can not only decolorize and remove impurities, but at the same time it can adsorb and remove selectively of noble metals.
Using Osaka Gas Chemicals high quality activated carbons "ANOX series" for this application enables cost saving versus the conventional methods of combined use of activated carbon and zeolite or methods using ion exchange resins or scavenger.
The ANOX series was specially developed for removal of polymerization inhibitor when purifying polymers, resins, polymers, monomers, etc.

Adsorption mechanism of a noble metal catalyst
The expected characteristics of Adsorption

Activated carbon of Osaka Gas Chemical has pore
distribution and surface characteristics effective for removal of homogeneous
catalyst remaining after the reaction, and it is possible to selectively adsorb and
remove it.

Effective use of Selective Adsorption Activated Carbon in the fields of electronic material, pharmaceutical intermediates and chemical intermediates
One of previous methods for metal removal
"Scavenger", a conventional metal removal method, is
a resin type metal adsorbent and is known to selectively remove metals in a target
liquid by using a structure with high metal coordination. And it is used in the
pharmaceutical industry etc. to reduce catalytic metals etc. used for reaction to
below.
However, in the scavenger, the selection performance changes depending on the type
of metal and its state. It is pointed out that choosing adsorbents properly and high
cost is a problem. Osaka Gas Chemical's activated carbon "Shirasagi ANOX-1"
"Shirasagi ANOX-2" can be removed without regard to zero valence, divalent valence
and state, and it is less expensive compared to scavengers. A metal scavenger is an
adsorbent obtained by modifying the surface of an inorganic adsorbent such as silica
gel or a synthetic resin of polystyrene type with a functional group capable of
coordinating to a metal atom such as an amino group, a thiol group, or a thiourea
group. And it is used to reduce and eliminate metals derived from homogeneous
catalysts and raw materials. Since these products differ greatly in removal ability
from the type and valency of target metal, it is necessary to newly select again if
the catalyst to be used changes. Osaka Gas Chemical's activated carbon "Shirasagi
ANOX - 1" "Shirasagi ANOX - 2" has stable removal capability regardless of metal
type and valence. Also, since the surface is not modified with functional groups, it
does not affect. Furthermore, activated carbon is a low cost adsorbent made of
carbon, so it is possible to operate the removal process at low cost.
